In another act that dehumanises and disregards the intrinsic value of the unborn child, companies are offering to turn embryos, who have been created through IVF, into “keepsake” jewellery. The move has been criticised by pro-life groups.
The companies offer to use human embryos, who have been created through the IVF process and then“leftover”, to make what they call “keepsake” jewellery.
IVF involves the removal of the woman’s eggs, where the eggs are then fertilised with a male’s sperm in a petri dish before being implanted back into the mother’s womb to continue their development. The use of IVF is condemned by the Catholic Church due to the lack of respect and dignity this process has towards the human life in the form of an embryo. They point to the fact that IVF involves thousands upon thousands of human lives at the embryonic stage of development being frozen and often discarded when no longer desired.
In reality, IVF creates a mentality that children are not unique individuals, but are instead products, who can also be bought or discarded, depending on the wishes of the parents. This sadly opens the door to many abuses, such as disregarding lives for reasons that could range from identified genetic issues or disabilities, lack of intelligence, or due to their gender, all so people could have the “perfect” child or family. In recent news that has been circulating, another abuse resulting from IVF is that companies are also offering to turn the child into “keepsake” jewellery.
Blossom Keepsake, a UK based jewellery company, is one company that has recently shared an ad for parents who have gone through the IVF process with “leftover” embryos still frozen away, claiming to offer a “gentle” way to honour the life of their child when donating the embryo - and giving this already existing child, a chance at life - doesn’t “feel right”.
Their website eerily describes their “service” as a way to “offer families a beautiful way to honour this chapter of their story — by transforming these embryos into timeless pieces that can be cherished forever.”
“Each embryo is treated with the utmost care, dignity, and respect by our experienced team of artisans.”
However, it is ironic that the company suggests that they are treating the embryo with dignity and respect, when they are in fact promoting the destruction of their lives and turning them into jewellery - treating them as mere products or tokens as opposed to dignified human beings. Naturally, this has been met with backlash across the pro-life community.
Live Action took to social media to condemn the actions of this company saying in a post
“These are human beings, children, being treated as objects. We cannot turn a blind eye to this abuse.”
In an analysis on this, published on Live Actions website, Cassy Cooke comments: “They are seen and treated as property, not as human beings. Wearing the remains of a child whom you intentionally killed seems macabre, to say the least.”
“Embryo keepsake jewelry” makes sense in a culture that increasingly sees children as products to be bought and optimized,” said Dr Kristin Collier in an X post, a professor at the University of Michigan.

In an article published on their website, SPUC surmise the concerns with such an act saying: “embedding a dead baby into a piece of jewellery is deeply unsettling, ultimately reflecting a culture that has grown comfortable with the idea that human life can be created and destroyed with such flippancy.”
SPUC’s Communications Manager Peter Kearney added that “the wilful destruction of human life for the sake of personal decoration is the hallmark of a society that turns a blind eye to the plight of young human life, whether through abortion or IVF.”
Blossom Keepsakes are not the only company to offer such a “service” as Live Action reported back in 2017 that Baby Bee Hummingbirds also turned embryos into jewellery, a business that appears to have since closed.
Regardless of the manner upon how the life is created, whether the process is right or wrong, once a life is there, it needs to be cherished and respected. Offering to instead destroy them and turn them into jewellery is a gross form of dehumanising these precious, innocent lives.
Sadly, we live in a society that embraces the likes of abortion and IVF, and the natural consequence of that is that human life in the womb is no longer cherished, but instead treated like property. Suggesting to turn them into jewellery only encourages this attitude. No human being should be treated in this way, and this should serve as a wake up call for society to realise that we need to start rethinking our attitudes towards our fellow human beings, whether in the womb or out.
